Menadione

Vitamin K3 or Menadione (2-Methyl-1, 4-naphthoquinone) is a parent compound for the whole group of Vitamin K and their derivatives. It is widely used in medicine and animal and especially poultry husbandry as an agent for improving blood coagulation. Different derivatives of Menadione available are:

The water soluble form of vitamin k3 is MSB (Sodium 2, 3-dihydro-2-mwthyl-1,4-naphthoquinone-2-sulfonate)

The other forms which are available are different only in the cationic part of the molecule. The analogue contains a quaternary nitrogen cation group instead of the Na+ cation. They are:

- MNBS (Nicotinamide 2, 3-dihydro-2-mwthyl-1,4-naphthoquinone-2-sulfonate-a adduct)

- MPBS (2-hydroxy – 4, 6 – dimethylpyrimidine 2, 3-dihydro-2-mwthyl-1, 4-naphthoquinone-2-sulfonate-a adduct)

Uses:
Menadione (Vitamin K3) is especially important in certain species of animals, which are not able to produce Menadione in their metabolisms; poultry, pigs and aquatic animals. Intensive farming for these animals is growing every year because their meats are getting more preferential due to price health. Consequential demands for Menadione is growing as well.

Menadione Exhibit antihemorrnagic. When Vitamin K is low or lacking, the blood vessels rupture, causing excessive bleeding internally, petechial hemorrhagic in the liver and erosion of the gizzard may occur. Embryos from Vitamin deficient chickens have high mortality due to bleeding late in incubation. For prevention, supply adequate levels of Vitamin k in the feed and administer antibiotics and sulpha drugs with great care. (General requirement 5 to 7 grams per ton feed)
